One type of glass becomes frosted, another darkens. From the outside, it may seem like they are the same thing, but they operate differently and solve different problems.

PDLC is needed when you need to quickly make glass frosted and hide what is happening behind it. Electrochromic glass is for when you need protection from the sun, want to reduce heat gain, while maintaining an outward view and adding privacy. How well one can see inside depends on the degree of tinting and lighting on both sides.

What is PDLC

PDLC is a film with liquid crystals. It is placed between layers of glass or applied to finished glass.

Classic PDLC works simply:

No electricity — the glass is frosted

Current applied — the glass is transparent

It switches instantly. Press a button — and it's done.

What is Electrochromic Glass

Electrochromic glass does not become frosted. It changes its shade — from light to dark. Like sunglasses with adjustable tint.

When a weak electrical signal is applied, charged particles move inside the glass. The glass gradually darkens or lightens, the view outside is preserved. Tinting also makes it harder to see in from the outside. However, the effect depends on lighting: in the evening, with indoor lights on, people outside might still be able to see inside.

Electrochromics work slower than PDLC. The transition takes several minutes — depending on the size of the glass and temperature. For a car, home, or office this is usually convenient: you can turn on the tinting in advance or set up automation.

Key Differences

Parameter

PDLC

Electrochromic

What happens

Transparent ↔︎ Frosted

Light ↔︎ Dark

Visibility through glass

Details hidden, silhouettes may be visible

Yes, the view is preserved

Speed

Instantly

Several minutes

Main task

Privacy

Sun protection and comfort

Where useful

Medical offices, showers, hotels, driver-passenger partitions

Cars, office partitions, shop windows, facades, windows, roofs

In terms of durability, electrochromic wins over PDLC. Electrochromic glass calmly serves 15–20 years, or even longer. PDLC usually starts to decline after a short time: polymers get tired from the sun and temperature fluctuations over time, the film may start to yellow. Plus, there is an important point regarding electricity. To remain transparent, PDLC needs constant current supply — the system runs non-stop. Electrochromics only need power during those few minutes while it changes shade. As a result, the load on contacts is lower.

Haze in PDLC's Transparent State

Even in a transparent state, PDLC retains some haze. In high-quality materials, it is barely noticeable at a direct angle, but scattering becomes more noticeable from an oblique angle.

Some PDLC film manufacturers write about light transmittance of about 80%. But this figure is for the film itself, not for the finished glass with all its layers. After assembly, the final light transmittance will be lower — it depends on the glass, adhesive, and conductive layers.

Plus, the total percentage of light doesn't show how much was scattered. Enough light might pass through, but the image will be less sharp.

Why PDLC Is Not Used on Windshields and Front Side Windows

Windshields and front side windows are constantly in the driver's field of vision. Here, not only brightness matters, but also image clarity — without haze, scattering, and distortions. The driver must clearly see the road, pedestrians, cars, and mirrors in any weather and at night.

PDLC retains characteristic light scattering even in transparent mode. It is more noticeable from an angle. Therefore, PDLC film is not suitable for windshields and front side windows.

An important point: the "automotive grade" label means that the material withstands automotive temperatures, vibrations, and the glass assembly process. This does not mean the film can be glued to any glass or used in the driver's viewing zone. For a car, the entire ready-made multi-layer glass unit is evaluated and certified, not a separate film.

Why Electrochromic is Better for a Car

Electrochromic glass does not frost or block the view. It darkens like sunglasses — the view is preserved. Drivers and passengers receive protection from bright light and privacy without the milky haze that PDLC has.

Electrochromic is suitable for the passenger area, sunroof, and panoramic roof.

What to Choose for Home and Office

In interior design, everything depends on the task: do you need to make a partition frosted and hide what's behind it, or maintain an outward view while adding privacy?

For facade windows, panoramic glazing, winter gardens, and atriums, electrochromic helps reduce sunlight brightness and heat gain while preserving the outward view. Inside partitions, it is used to regulate visibility if fully hiding the room is not required.

Electrochromic glazing can be linked to light sensors and climate control. In sunny weather, the windows are darker; in cloudy weather — lighter. It maintains comfort without curtains and blinds.

How to Choose a Technology

Ask yourself the main question: what result do you need?

If you want to protect against bright sun and heat, regulate light, preserve an outward view, and add privacy — choose electrochromic glass.

If you need glazing in the driver's line of sight — do not use PDLC film; consider certified finished glass with clear visibility.

We manufacture electrochromic solutions for projects where it is important to protect against sun and heat, preserve an outward view, and add privacy. Tinted glass makes what is happening inside less noticeable from the outside (although the degree of privacy depends on lighting on both sides). Such a solution works in a car, house, and office.

Want to order electrochromic glasses for your project?

Write, call — we will consult and calculate the cost.

["post-1363","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry
["GET
